Project Goal
The 3-in-1 etched grater is designed for kitchen tool brand OXO. By analyzing the previous models of OXO's graters and their target market, this new architecture purposes to adopt 3 needs: multi-size grating (fine to coarse), saving storage space, and easy & safe to clean. This model also inherits OXO's 'good grip' form language and inherits the color code of its product line.

Market Research: Grater
The existing grater products by OXO can be categorized by their architecture. One category is the hand-hold graters, each grater can do one-size grating, and the user must buy several graters if multi-size grating is required. Each grater is small, but the more graters the user buys, the more storage space in the kitchen is taken. Another category is box-graters. Every box-grater can tackle multi-size grating, but it always hurts users' hands when doing inside clean.
Needs & Wants: Less storage space & Easy to clean
By collecting the user feedback of graters in the market from Amazon, Bedbath&beyond, and other retailers, the deficiencies of existing products appear. Users like handhold graters, because the box-graters require users to put their hands in the center space to clean food pieces, which let their hands be cut easily. But users also prefer that the single grater can do multi-size grating, like box-graters.
How to balance the two wants?
Ideation and iteration
Hand sketches are trying to explore the way of grating and combining the multi-size grating surfaces with the handhold grater architecture. Also includes experiments with new cleaning accessories for the grater.
Rapid Prototypes and Tests
Test the sketched design by building Frankenstein models with cardboard. Adjust size, user experience, and mechanism (pressing button, rotating the grating surface).
Brand Design Language Analysis
Digests OXO's design language for applying them to the new design and building details.

User Experience Details: Color Code
3 color dots are added to indicate the grating area the user would like to use. Colors come from OXO's grater product line to keep the consistency of the brand's design language.
User Scenarios
This design can be used on the cutting board, round pan, plates, and pizza. The circular architecture indicates this design can be specifically used for cheese grating.
